Scorpions

Scorpions are a heavy metal, hard rock German band. Anyone that is a fan of good hard rock and metal music should know the thrillic Scorpions. Some of their most famous songs are “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, “No One Like You”, “Wind of Change”, “Still Loving You”, “Send Me an Angel”, and many other. Scorpions are from Hanover, Germany and they started in 1969. The band has sold over 75 million albums worldwide and they were in place 46 at VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Now, the incredible band concludes of: Klaus Meine, is the lead vocals and rhythm guitar since 1970 until now. Matthias Jabs is the lead and rhythm guitarist of the band since 1978. Rudolf Schenker is also the rhythm and lead guitarist and backing vocals, he was the one that actually started the group in 1965 and then everyone joined in! Pawel Maciwoda is playing the bass and backing vocals since 2003. James Kottak is playing the drums, percussion and backing vocals since 1996. Many guitarists came and went, others left to go to other bands, others had health problems, but Meine and Schenker are the ones that didn’t change and Meine’s voice, for me, is what makes Scorpions so incredible. I must say that Scorpion’s album covers were not so appropriate and some stores refused to sell some of their albums. I find them quite daring especially if you recall that were the ‘80s. And there are some very daring video clips that shocked me( I didn’t except something like that from the ‘70s-‘80s, really if it was now days I wouldn’t even notice, but it’s some long time ago and things were different back then!).

The video that I choose is “The Wind of Change”. This song was written for the Cold war, the wall that divided Germany. Every time I listen to this song it gives me the chills. It makes me feel the pain and how strong those people had felt when the wall was built and separated the country. Many people were killed during that time and I must say that this video is quite touching. Scorpions had many successful songs that were top hits at the time, and I must admit that Meine’s voice is magnificent, dreaming. His voice is amazing and I just can’t put it in words the way it makes me feel. Every time I am sad or really angry I turn the volume to the full and I just listen to Scorpions and they send me to heaven! “Always Somewhere”, “Holiday”, “You and I”, “Still Loving You” are some of my favorite songs, but there are so many that I can’t write them all down. Scorpions totally rocked the ‘70s and ‘80s and until now they do concerts around the world and if I have the chance I wouldn’t miss it for the world to attend to one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2Eyao-2KWo&feature=channel ( Unfortunately there are no codes for this video :S)

News Flash-A baby needs to survive

The baby’s parents didn’t have a lot of food at home so they decided that it was time for their son to learn how to survive on his own. They told him to feed himself, without eating the furniture and to take care of the dog. As soon as they left, he grabbed the dog’s foot and started to clean it, but since he was so hungry he got tempted and tried a bite of the dog’s foot. But it was so delicious that he ate all of it! Thank God dog’s have four feet!!! :)

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe

But even yet I refrained and kept still. I scarcely breathed. I held the lantern motionless. I tried how steadily I could maintain the ray upon the eye. Meantime the hellish tattoo of the heart increased. It grew quicker and quicker, and louder and louder, every instant. The old man's terror must have been extreme! It grew louder, I say, louder every moment! -- do you mark me well? I have told you that I am nervous: so I am. And now at the dead hour of the night, amid the dreadful silence of that old house, so strange a noise as this excited me to uncontrollable terror. Yet, for some minutes longer I refrained and stood still. But the beating grew louder, louder! I thought the heart must burst. And now a new anxiety seized me -- the sound would be heard by a neighbour! The old man's hour had come! With a loud yell, I threw open the lantern and leaped into the room. He shrieked once -- once only. In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done. But for many minutes the heart beat on with a muffled sound. This, however, did not vex me; it would not be heard through the wall. At length it ceased. The old man was dead. I removed the bed and examined the corpse. Yes, he was stone, stone dead. I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there many minutes. There was no pulsation. He was stone dead. His eye would trouble me no more.

“Tell-Tale Heart”

For homework this weekend we had to watch these three videos and compare them. On the following text I will compare the three videos and I will tell you which one I liked the best and why. And which one made me understand the actual story better.
1)

2)

3)

The first video was the one that made me understand the story best. The person who was reading the story was talking very clearly, and that helped me to understand what he was saying. The video images were describable enough to contribute to my understanding. The person that was telling the story was making the story scary and very interesting. He was emphasizing the right words and that made the video successful.
The second video wasn’t so good to my opinion. It was very scary and the story wasn’t clear. It was messed up, it was going back and forth and if I didn’t know the story it would be hard to follow.
The third video though, was very funny! But if I haven’t seen the first video or heard the story I wouldn’t understand ANYTHING! It was funny but the little puppet could use more crops to make it more interesting.

Truman vs. Jonas

Books and movies have many differences and similarities between them. People around the world compare books with movies, all the time; they compare their plots, characters and settings. In some situations there are books and movies that are the same. In our class we read a book called ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry. When we finished reading and analyzing that book, we watched a movie that had many similarities and differences with our book. ‘The Truman Show’, directed by Peter Weir, was the movie that we watched. In our situation we were able to compare easily the book with the movie, because they had a similar idea: being controlled. Nobody likes being controlled by anybody, especially when you learn that you whole life has been a lie. In my essay I will compare Jonas’s and Truman’s emotions, the plot, and the clues that they get.

Jonas’s and Truman’s emotions change when they realize what’s truly happening. Jonas and Truman are both very strong characters, they never hold their emotions back. When Jonas learns the truth about his community and about his father’s job, that it was to kill innocent babies, Jonas doesn’t express the anger for his father to him or to anyone else; he expresses his real emotions to his only friend, the Giver. On the other hand, Truman expresses his emotions to the whole world, even though he doesn’t know it. Both Jonas and Truman have the need to share the truth with other people. Jonas asks his parents if they love him, or when he puts his hand on his friends’ backs and asking them if they can see anything different. Truman tries to share some of the clues he got with his friend, he wants someone to understand him. Jonas is not allowed to have stirrings, the need to like, and attract the opposite sex. So he has to take a pill that stops the stirrings, but when Jonas becomes the Receiver he doesn’t take the pill anymore. However Truman is allowed to experience stirrings and to have sexual intercourse with his “wife”. They both want to go away from their community, to explore the rest of the world. Truman is looking for traveling, while Jonas is asking questions about release, about Elsewhere and many other things. Jonas wants to go, after he receives the memories, and he realizes how awful their community is, and when he watches the tape where he sees his father killing a young baby and pretend that everything is all right. On the other hand, Truman wanted to go since the beginning of his life.

Although, Jonas’s and Truman’s plots are similar, at the same time they differ in many ways. In both situations, someone knows what Jonas and Truman are doing. In Jonas’s situation his parents know what he is doing or thinking, by telling his dreams in the morning and the feelings that he experienced that day during the evening meal. However Truman’s situation is even worse. People watch him around the world 24/7. There are 5000 cameras in Truman’s community and everyone knows what he is doing and where he is. In both communities, the family units are arranged, and couples don’t fell in love and get married. In Jonas’s community the couples are chosen by the Elders and in Truman’s community they are only pretending, since they are all actors. Truman was adopted by a company, from the orphanage that he was. While, Jonas was adopted by parents. The Giver, the Elders, and Jonas are the only people in Jonas’s community that know that their world is “fake”, and they know the real truth. Yet, in Truman’s community he is the only one that doesn’t know what is going on. Jonas and Truman don’t know where they are going when they leave their community. Jonas and Gabriel search for the Elsewhere with Jonas’s bicycle. And Truman took a boat and left without knowing where he is going or what he will find.

Similarly, Jonas and Truman get clues often, but it’s hard for them to understand and accept the truth. Truman accepts the world he lives in, because he sees everyone else living the same way. In the same way, in Jonas’s community everyone accepts their world and doesn’t ask many questions. Jonas and Truman don’t have a real relationship with their father, or mother. Truman and his wife don’t have a real relationship between them, since it’s her job to be his wife and she is only pretending. They prevent Jonas from finding the real world by having all those rules that are about everything. And Truman is blocked, every time he wants to leave, by cars getting in his way, by people stopping him and by the fake newspapers that say their country is the best place to be. Jonas gets many clues at a younger age than Truman. When he knows that nobody actually knows what release means, he gets a little suspicious and he wants to know. Also when he sees the apple changing color, when he throws it up in the air, he wonders what’s going on. As well as Fiona’s hair change color. Jonas knows the real truth when he receives the memories and that’s when he gets a lot of clues. Truman’s first clue, was when he had dated a girl he liked, and she liked him to, so she told him that everything is a lie, his whole life is a lie, and that people watch him all the time. Or when he saw a light bulb falling from the sky. One day as Truman was changing channels on the radio he heard someone saying that Truman had turned left and actually Truman was turning left, so he knew that something very weird was going on. When Truman had went to the beach, rain started falling, but it was falling only on him and nowhere else, that made Truman suspicious. Also he entered a building and went to the elevator, but as the doors of the elevator opened there was no elevator, there was a lady sitting in a room and there were tables with food for the actors. And finally the fact that he couldn’t go to Fiji in any way made him more curious than ever. Truman had discovered not only the truth, but he got the clues at an older age than Jonas.

Everybody reacts in a different way when they learn that their life has been all a lie. These two characters that I compared, Jonas and Truman, reacted in a similar way. I described the tree most important topics of Jonas’s and Truman’s situations, their emotions, the plot of their story and the clues that they get. I enjoyed reading The Giver and watching The Truman Show and I found them both very interesting.

The Giver: Discuss whether Jonas' assignment as the next Receiver of Memory is an honor or a punishment.

I believe that Jonas’ assignment as the next Receiver of Memory, is an honor. It has only a few negatives, but many important and serious positives. I will start with the negatives of this assignment. First of all, he is not allowed to discuss his assignment or his training (even if he did no one would understand him without the memories.) with his friends at school, like everyone else did, nor with his family at home. But what makes this assignment look different and weird to many people, is that they don’t really know what it is to have the memories. There are positive things about this assignment, but no one except the Giver and the Receiver can understand. They have the privilege to see beyond, and by that, receive the memories which show emotions, colors, music, places and weather-changes that don’t exist in their community because of Sameness. Jonas and the Giver are the only people in their community who actually know, with the help of the memories, how awful their community actually is. They know that everyone is pretending, without knowing it. They don’t know what marriage is or how a real and normal family looks like and acts like. And the most important, is that the Giver and the Receiver are the only ones who can change their community, who can change Sameness and make everything like it used to be a really long time ago.

The Giver: Explain how Jonas' community is hypocritical.

Jonas’ community is hypocritical because they lie about the most important things in their meaningless lives. First of all, when kids go to school they always teach them to say the truth, and not to lie. But in the rules of Jonas’s assignment, it said that he may lie. So how does he know that no one lies? People might say that they are not allowed to lie, but after all we don’t know if in their rules it says that they could lie. When people get released, which happens almost every day, is all a lie. The truth is that when someone is released, is actually killed. When the Old get released after their ceremony, when they walk through that door, they go to the ‘lab’ where they put them an injection that kills them, and then put them in a box that is placed in a small door in a wall. Nobody knows that except from the Giver, the Receiver, and the people who kill them. But when innocent babies get released is very unfair. Just because they are twins, or they don’t sleep soundly at night, doesn’t mean that they have to be killed. Now what they pretend that release is, is that everything is good and nice, and people should want to be released. Also people don’t know much about release, there is not enough information given to them. The only thing that they know is that everyone is happy about it, and that when the Ceremony of Release finishes, they walk out of one door and nobody knows what there is behind that door.

The Giver: Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Sameness in Jonas's community.

There are many advantages of Sameness. The most important, is that people don’t fight between them and there is no war. Also, everything is fair, there are no poor and hungry people, and there are no rich, and full people. Everybody is equal. Also there are no slaves and people working under terrible conditions. Even though, kids might fall and scratch their knees, there is no serious physical, or emotional pain. The climate control is good for the farmers, because their crops don’t get destroyed. And the last advantage of Sameness is that there are no cars and pollution. So these people live in a healthy and quiet environment, and they exercise often by riding their bikes. Even though it looks weird there are not so many disadvantages of Sameness. First of all people don’t have a choice, they don’t have their own opinions, and everything is chosen by others for them. Everything is the same; they don’t have colors and music. They don’t choose their jobs, their husbands and wives, their food, their clothes, their names, and their houses. People don’t have their own birth day, and they celebrate their birthdays together on the same day. It’s like no one is an independent person and grown-up. The most important disadvantage that will shock you, is that people don’t have emotions, love, sadness, angriness, happiness, joy, and feelings in general. Can you imagine life without feelings? The people in that community don’t even know what these emotions and feelings are. Also the fact that they have a bike is tricky. They don’t have cars, airplanes, trains, metros, motorcycles, and any other vehicles, that can transport them to other places. And with the bikes you can’t go very far, because you get easily tired.

Describing a little bit more my “haunted” movie

The clothes of the actors and actresses that will play in the movie will be casual. Maybe jeans and simple t-shirts, because the will suppose to discover this old mansion and find interesting things in there, so they will be young women and men searching this old, house and maybe finding things that might change the world. Also the music will be classic and a piano with a violet will be playing. It will sound delicate and scary. It will make the audience being more scared and the music will get louder and “heavier” when a scene with something mysterious or when something bad will happen, it will scare the audiences even more. I would suggest that the mansion will be full of rats, and traps for unexpected visitors, and little holes with nasty mice inside. Also I will suggest that those young “visitors” will be in a major danger, ‘cause who ever tried to search in that creepy mansion never came back…! The night that they will visit will be cloudy, with a very bright moon and with a deep blue-black color on the night sky.

Directing a horror movie!

If I was the director of a horror movie I would set the movie in a big haunted house in a quiet neighborhood were there will be only big old houses, and big, black forests. There would be no lights in the streets and the neighbor would be so quiet that the only thing that you will be able to hear is the wind passing through the black trees. There will always be a full moon and clouds over the sky. The windows of the house will be covered with black sheets and there will be broken mirrors around the house. The house will have spiders and weird insects everywhere and there will be ghosts flying around the rooms. No one will be living there and the style of the house will be old and creepy. There will be a huge frond door and in each room there will be a white tidy bed with white sheets and a black pillow. the hall will be as it was years before when people used to live there, there will be tea caps on the coffee tables and the sweets that they used to eat on the evenings will still be there but in a really bad condition. The kitchen will be as it was before; there will be food in the casseroles will have food inside and the table will be ready with black plates and white napkins. The house will pretend to be like it was in the past, when people used to live there. The story of the house will be that one evening the couple that lived there disappeared one evening that was raining a lot and after that evening no one saw them again; so the house stayed as it was ages ago.

RESPOND TO A PREDICTION: In 2155, computers will replace human teachers.

I definitely disagree that in 2155, computers will replace human teachers. There is a magic in teaching and the teacher does the lesson and gives it interest, if there are no teachers I believe that there will be no schools of course and that there would not be such thing as teaching. I think that maybe people will not have to learn, they will have computers filling their brains with knowledge. Also it’s not that handy to have computers instead of real human teachers, you won’t be able to ask questions or discuss with them about books, or homework. Teachers have a way in teaching and make you love or hate a subject. Computers I think they don’t have that technique. In addition to that, it has a huge affect on you health; when you are for a long period of time in front of the computer screen your eyes get tired and you might even have future problems.
I have successfully edited by blog!

SURFF: Your Favorite Character

The book that I am reading it’s called “They Wear What under Their Kilts?” . The author of my book is Katie Maxwell. My favorite character is the main character in my book, she is the protagonist of the story. Her name is Emily, she is almost 16 years old and she is a very exciting person. She loves her friends and she can do everything for them. Emily is my favorite character because she is lazy and lively. When she really wants something she never puts it down until she reaches her goal. Her goal in the book is to snog an eleven-fingered Scottish hottie, Ruaraidh. Ruaraidh is an eighteen year old guy, which for Holly (Emily’s friend) and Emily he is very cool and they totally fancy him. The problem is that they both like him, and they are best friends, so they put a competition, who ever gets to snog him first wins. Emily, my favorite character, is a very girly girl and she is very beautiful, she knows it and she also thinks that she is the best for Ruaraidh. The way that she behaves reminds me of another character Madeline, from “Princesses Don’t Sweat”. Madeline is also girly, and she loves make up and she has to ALWAYS look fabulous, just like Emily. Also Madeline love her friends and she is always ready to give them everything, like Emily! Emily is a great character and I enjoy reading her funny stories!!

How will blogging affect/change your writing? Why?

Blogging will affect my writing in three ways. First of all it will help me spell correctly the words that I don’t know how to spell and instead of searching in a dictionary the computer will correct my mistakes. Also it will be easier for me to remember the correct spelling of some words. Second it will make me improve my writing, because I will know that other people will read my writings so I will have to write better paragraphs. The third way that will change my writing is that it is easier for me to type my homework instead of writing it by hand.
